Winners from the 2019 Hartford Creative Contest.
This community contest is offered annually to all Hartford students living in Hartford, regardless of the school they attend. Non Hartford resident students attending a Hartford school are also encouraged to submit entries. The contest is open to students in grades 4 - 12. Our goal is to encourage young people to share their ideas and solutions through prose, poetry, or art describing their feelings about the chosen topic.
Tiana Hercules founded The Hartford Creative Contest (The Contest) in 2014. Originally called the Hartford Youth Essay Contest, it encouraged students to write about violence in their Hartford communities as a means for them to share their ideas on how to improve their neighborhoods.
"Youth, and students in particular, can often feel as though they have no voice or control over some of the things that occur around them. The Essay Writing Contest was a way to tap into the ingenuity, passion, and innovation of our youth to have their perspectives on violence and how they would go about eliminating it. I hope by participating in this essay contest students feel empowered and encouraged."
The Contest has expanded since Tiana started it in 2014. Most notably, the committee now running The Contest offers two open ended, positive leaning prompts for students to choose between. In 2017, the committee broadened the scope of The Contest to include poetry and art, allowing the opportunity for a more diverse base of Hartford students to showcase their talents and ideas.
First, second and third prizes awarded to winners in each category!
Since its founding in 2014, the Hartford Creative Contest has been near and dear to the hearts of everyone involved. Each year, the contest grows larger and more inclusive, which in turn requires more funding. Our hope is to keep this amazing opportunity alive for the students of Hartford, but we need your help. This year, we are expecting to need roughly $4,000 to cover all expenses.
